EN ISO 80079-36 replaced EN 13463-1 and brought the requirements for non-electrical equipment into line with the ISO/IEC system. Its central concept is the Ignition Hazard Assessment — a systematic analysis identifying every potential ignition source in normal operation, in expected malfunction and in rare malfunction.
What it covers
The standard applies to rotating and moving machinery: pumps, fans, compressors, gearboxes, conveyors, mixers, hoists — and even hand tools, where used in a hazardous area.

The link to PPE: equipment carried by personnel in an ATEX zone — tools included — must be resistant to spark generation. Copper-beryllium and bronze non-sparking tools exist for exactly this reason.
