Prolonged kneeling causes bursitis, meniscal damage and chronic pain. EN 14404 sets the requirements for knee protectors that spread the load and shield against sharp objects.
The four types
- Type 1
- Independent of clothing — strapped to the leg
- Type 2
- Foam or plastic inserts fitted into trouser pockets
- Type 3
- Attached to the garment but not to the body
- Type 4
- Part of a larger device — a knee protector built into a support frame
Performance levels
| Level | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Level 0 | Flat surfaces, no penetration requirement |
| Level 1 | Uneven ground, stones and debris; penetration force ≥100 N |
| Level 2 | Especially demanding conditions; penetration force ≥250 N |
A common mistake with Type 2 inserts is a mismatch with the trouser pocket — the insert must fit snugly and sit correctly over the kneecap, otherwise it slips down and the protection is lost.
