EN 812 covers the bump cap — a cap with a rigid insert intended to protect against striking the head on a low ceiling, a pipe, a confined space or the underside of a vehicle. The distinction from EN 397 is critical: a bump cap does not absorb the energy of a falling object and must never be substituted for a construction helmet.
Tests
- Shock absorption — a flat striker at 5 J; the transmitted force must not exceed 15 kN.

Bump caps are usually baseball-cap shaped and light, which makes them comfortable in logistics, vehicle servicing and production lines where there is no falling-object risk but a constant risk of knocking your head.
