EN 567 sets the requirements for rope clamps. The device has a toothed cam that grips the rope under load: the clamp slides freely upward and locks immediately downward.
Use
- Ascending a rope — normally in pairs, a handled and a chest ascender.
- Load capture and progress capture in hauling systems.
- Raising a casualty in rescue operations.
Why it is not a fall arrester
This is the essential warning: an EN 567 clamp is not intended to arrest a fall. Under dynamic load the toothed cam cuts the rope sheath and the rope can fail at around 4 kN — well before the clamp itself does. Fall protection requires an EN 12841 type A or EN 353-2 device on a separate safety line.
