EN 360 sets the requirements for retractable type fall arresters (self-retracting lifelines). The device contains a spring-loaded drum: the line pays out and retracts as the worker moves, but a centrifugal brake locks instantly if the line runs out quickly.
The main advantage
The main advantage of an SRL is the short arrest distance. An ordinary lanyard with absorber needs more than six metres of clearance; an SRL typically arrests within 60 cm, which makes it the only correct choice at low heights.
Rules of use
- The device is normally anchored above the worker. Working off to the side creates a swing-fall risk.
- For horizontal or sloping surfaces a specifically certified leading-edge model is required.
- The line must be allowed to retract under control — never let it snap back, as that damages the mechanism.
- Before each use test the brake: pull the line sharply and it should lock.
After a fall the device must be returned to the manufacturer for inspection. Many models have a fall indicator that changes visibly once loaded.
