EN 1891 sets the requirements for low-stretch kernmantel ropes. Kernmantel construction places the load on an inner core (kern), protected from abrasion by a braided sheath (mantel).
The two types
| Type | Diameter | Static strength | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type A | 10.5 – 16 mm | ≥ 22 kN | General rope access and rescue |
| Type B | 8.5 – 16 mm | ≥ 18 kN | Restricted use, lower loads |
Why not dynamic rope
Dynamic climbing rope (EN 892) stretches deliberately, to absorb the energy of a fall. In rope access that stretch is a problem: a worker suspended at 50 m on dynamic rope would drop several metres and lose control. EN 1891 rope stretches by less than 5%.
Care
- Protect the rope from sharp edges with a canvas protector or roller.
- Chemicals, acids in particular, destroy the fibre invisibly.
- UV weakens rope — store it dark and dry.
- Run the whole length through your hands before every use.
