EN 470-1 was the European standard for welders' clothing from 1995. It defined limited flame spread, spatter resistance and construction requirements, but had no class system to reflect the severity of the work.
What EN ISO 11611 introduced
- Two classes (1 and 2), tying the choice of clothing to the welding process.
- An explicit electrical insulation requirement up to 100 V d.c.
- The addition of radiant heat testing to ISO 6942.
- Harmonisation with ISO, making the standard internationally recognised.
EN 470 is no longer valid for new certification. Clothing marked only EN 470 was made a long time ago and is best replaced with an EN ISO 11611 product.
