EN 381-11 set the requirements for chainsaw protective jackets. That role now belongs to EN ISO 11393-6.
When it is needed
For an operator on the ground, upper-body protection is not normally required — the saw works near the lower body. Aloft the situation changes: an arborist holds the saw overhead, to the side and often at awkward angles, so chest and shoulder protection becomes critical.
Such a jacket usually provides class 1 protection and is often made in a high-visibility colour, which helps the ground crew keep track of the climber's position.
