EN 172 sets the requirements for sunglare filters intended for industrial use. The key difference from ordinary sunglasses (EN ISO 12312-1) is that EN 172 accounts for the working environment: the filter must not distort the red, yellow, green and blue signal colours that safety depends on.

Typical use: outdoor work, construction sites, ports, mining and transport terminals. Filters darker than 4.1 are not suitable for driving, and EN 172 filters are not suitable for night driving at all.
